I recently had dinner with my sister and hatched a ‘brilliant’ plan.  My sister is a teacher and works in a childcare centre.  She was chatting to me about the potatoes she recently grew with the children and how excited they all were by the success.  I suggested that together we produce a book for gardening projects with kids.  I figured that with our combined skills we could create a very useful book.

Anyway she was only tentatively interested.   She’s had a lot on her plate lately and I think she just saw it as more work.  However I have not given up on the idea and will continue to sell it to her.  Watch this space for updates!

That is a great idea! I have recently got back into gardening after quite a lapse and am surprised at how enthusiastic my 10 year old son is. We have built a vegie garden, repotted and planted lots of things in the last 2 months and also have a hot house going which my son checks and waters every morning, joyously reporting back to me how many new shoots have emerged! A gardening book for kids would be wonderful, keep pestering your sister!

    Hi Dianne,
Unfortunately this idea has taken a backseat. My sister has undertaken some studies and really hasn’t got any spare time for a book project. So instead I’ve been working on some projects of my own until she comes around.

Coming soon will be some greeting cards (they’re at the printers right now) and coming next year will be a gardening novel I’m working on. It’s a big project that has taken longer than I first thought!

    Steve

Steve – what a great idea. To get started you could start with a short programme for a visit to a few schools – apparently this is known as an “incursion” in school speak. Pre-schools are always bringing in outside experts to tell kids about things like animals, music, science etc. A fun gardening session would be very popular and could turn into a good line of business itself, as well as providing a growing base of fans for your book, video, website……iarla
